What is the History of Ludo?

The history of Ludo is extremely fascinating - it is believed to have originated in India. It is said to be derived from the ancient Indian game Pachisi, reportedly played by Mughal emperors.

Ludo made its way to the West in the 19th century and it gained popularity. It was first known in the West was in 1891 - it first appeared in an English magazine. Soon after, it became a beloved game in both England and America.

Ludo Game is extremely simple and hence, it is also extremely accessible to players of all ages. The objective here is very straightforward - you have to maneuver all your pieces around the board and into your home base before your opponents.

The game can be played by four players, each with four pieces (pawns). Turns are taken by rolling a die and moving pieces according to the number rolled. Rolling a 6 grants another turn. If a piece lands on a square that is occupied by another player's piece, the latter is sent back to its starting position. The first player to successfully navigate all four pieces home wins the game!

• Thai Ludo: Played on a rectangular board with four corner pockets - each player starts with four pieces. The objective in this game is to move all four pieces around the board and into the home base.
• Ludo Dice Game: Instead of pawns, in this variation players use dice in this variant. The goal in this game is to be the first reach 100 points.
