History of Chess

The origins of chess are a point of contention, and there is no clear consensus on its origins, let alone the history of chess from the beginning to the present. • Bishop: Two bishops per player move diagonally to any unobstructed square along their diagonal path. One bishop moves on light-colored squares, and the other on dark-colored squares. White's bishops start at c1 and f1, and Black's at c8 and f8.
• Queen: Each player has one queen, combining the powers of the rook and bishop. It can move vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. The White queen begins at d1, and the Black queen at d8.
• Knight: Two knights for each player move in an L-shape: two squares in one direction and one square perpendicular to that. Knights can jump over other pieces and always land on a square of a different color. White's knights start at b1 and g1, and Black's at b8 and g8.
• Capturing: Pieces capture enemy pieces by moving to the square occupied by the target piece. They capture in the same manner as their normal movement.
• Pawns: Eight pawns per player move forward but capture diagonally. On their initial move, pawns can advance two squares. Pawns promote to other pieces when reaching the opposite end of the board.
• Castling: A special move that combines the king and rook. The king moves two squares towards the rook, and the rook moves to the square the king crossed. This move is limited to once per player, subject to certain conditions.
